A visit to the museum aroused my curiosity about prehistoric jewellery. It’s obvious that the love for the ornaments has been inherited from our ancestors. A little boy, at the museum, had a strange idea or rather an important doubt. He asked his mother if the animals whose teeth and claws had been used by the prehistoric men as jewellery wore replacements later.

Can you imagine a wild animal with dentures and faux claws? It surely would have looked very out of place, alongside the inconvenience caused to the animal.

Well, that’s how cave men created ornaments.Over the centuries, the love for ornaments still continues though the methods used to make them differ and distinct metals can be used to identity the different countries where they are hugely popular.For example, India can be recognized by its love for the yellow metal, ie gold. The west uses more of silver, diamonds can be linked to south Africa and so on.Even the designs are quite distinct. Indian style is referred to as art deco, it has a bit of every style in it, the west is very contemporary, Chinese patterns reflect nature and so on.

Who doesn’t like to look good or rather celestial?
Haven’t we all seen elephants, horses, camels, cows being decorated during festivals?
These days men are becoming more jewellery conscious than women. It is a statement of style.

Do you think jewellery is a luxury?
Well, maybe, but there is something for everyone, whatever their budget. Silver, terracotta, wood, paper are some affordable jewel styles.
